Can a Chipped Tooth or Crown Be Repaired?

Chipped toothThe short answer is, yes, a chipped tooth or a crown can be repaired. If you chip a tooth and are feeling any pain, make a dental appointment as soon as possible.

How and Why Teeth and Crowns Get Chipped

Chipped Teeth

Teeth are tough. The enamel that covers your teeth is the strongest, hardest material in your body. Enamel helps to protect the nerves and roots inside your teeth from decay and from pain.

Chipped toothTeeth are though, but not indestructible. They can get chipped from:

  • wear and tear
  • a fall or a blow
  • biting into something hard
  • teeth grinding

If a tooth has some decay, it is more prone to cracking or chipping.

Chipped Crowns

Dental Crowns are made of metals, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin, ceramic or porcelain. Crowns are not easy to chip, but it can happen the same way chips in teeth can happen.

Chipped toothA chipped tooth can be repaired. The treatment will be different, for each situation, depending on:

  • how much of the tooth is chipped
  • the location of the tooth
  • the condition of the tooth

If the chip is small, it may be easily repaired by bonding. Bonding is a simple process where a material called resin is placed on your tooth and then shaped to look like your natural tooth. The resin is made to match the color of your natural tooth. The process is painless and doesn’t usually require numbing the tooth. Bonding is especially useful when the chipped tooth is a front tooth.

Larger chips can be repaired with a filling, the same process that is used when a tooth is decayed. When a chip is too large to be repaired by bonding or filling, it may need to be covered with a dental crown. A dental crown will protect the tooth from sensitivity and further decay.

Porcelain crowns can chip and, like normal teeth, if the chip is not too large, can be repaired using resin that matches the color of the crown. Dental Crowns should last from five to fifteen years, or more. Porcelain crowns are more fragile than metal crowns and may need to be replaced.
